CLISSIS - Centro Lusíada de Investigação em Serviço Social e intervenção Social (Lusíada Center for Research in Social Work and Social Intervention) was born in 2007, in the context of the integration of the Lisbon Higher Institute of Social Work into the Universidade Lusíada.

Being the only specific research center in Portugal on Social Work, from the beginning, CLISSIS defined itself in a broader scope of "Social Intervention", promoting research into social problems, social policies and social actors.

CLISSIS was evaluated by FCT in 2014 and 2019 (see presentation) with a GOOD rating, and was financed by it from 2015 onwards.

CLISSIS vision is to be a technical and scientific reference that contributes, through its activities, to the development of knowledge about social problems, to be used by social and professional organizations in the design of strategies, policies, programs and instruments for promoting the social inclusion, well-being and quality of life of the Portuguese population.

CLISSIS integrates researchers from different scientific areas, most of them from Social Work, but also from Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology and Educational Sciences, who come from ISSSL – Instituto Superior de Serviço Social de Lisboa, IPCE – Instituto de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação, both from Universidade Lusíada, ISSSP – Instituto Superior de Serviço Social do Porto and other higher education institutions, as well as social organizations.

One of the strengths of CLISSIS is its multidisciplinary nature, with researchers from different areas working on identical topics. Another strong point is the existing connection with social and community organizations, through the networks of its researchers, reinforcing a clear perspective and concern in the areas of Social Intervention, social innovation and social impact. A third strength is its connection with graduate and postgraduate education at Universidade Lusíada and ISSSP.

CLISSIS research team currently consists of 37 holder researchers and 64 collaborative researchers bringing to CLISSIS new knowledge and experiences, new research interests that have been organized in three main areas:

1. Social Work: History, thought and training;


2. Social inclusion and well-being: Problems, professional practices, and intervention methodologies


3. Social policies and citizenship.

CLISSIS also integrates CIHMESS – Center for Interpretation of Social Service History and Memory and Lab-FEACC – Laboratory of Phenomenology, Ethnomethodology and Conversational Analysis for Social Clusivity.
